ensuring provision of safe access to water: safe water aids project (swap) water quality laboratory services

swapSafe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP) is a Kenya registered Non Governmental Organization (NGO) working in close partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), stakeholders in Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) sector and communities to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of health interventions, products and technologies targeting vulnerable and underserved communities in Western Kenya.

SWAP established a water laboratory in 2007 where quality assurance of research samples was done. In order to have a self-sustaining laboratory that no longer requires external support, SWAP received financial assistance from the Procter & Gamble’s Children Safe Drinking Water Program through CDC Foundation. The aim was to strengthen Laboratory infrastructure; procure required laboratory equipment and ensure laboratory maintenance.

The water laboratory has been used for several research studies and innovation of water technology devices including; LifeStraw water devices; a low cost MSR Venturi Automatic Chlorine doser; EP water solar disinfection device; Ceramaji water filters and PATH water filters. Additionally, water analysis for different partners such as CARE Kenya, Water Sanitation for Urban Poor (WSUP), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) and International Institutions such as University of Illinois and Stanford University and Local Universities for Students training The Laboratory has a capacity to process and analyze about 60-70 samples per day.

 

The technology used in the lab is ISO 9308 specifies a method for the enumeration of E. coli and coliform bacteria in water using colilert reagents and ISO 9308-1:2014 membrane filtration method technology (coli-blue broth). SWAP’s water lab offer services using modern HACH equipments to analyze real time analysis in water to her clients at cost Kenya Shillings 7,000 and 3,000 for full chemical and bacteriological analyses respectively
